Using lollypop sticks, elastic bands and bottle tops, the Year 7 scientists were creating catapults in their after-school science workshop yesterday. The “arrows” were Love Heart sweets that the students aimed and fired at targets positioned around the lab. They quickly realised that the trajectory of the sweets, and the force used to launch them, was key to hitting the targets.

The Chinese New Year was the inspiration for this weeks after school science club for a group of our Year 8 students. Mrs Ross had designed experiments around the theme of fireworks including “fire-writing” and the composition of sparklers. These after school sessions are an excellent way for the students to increase their knowledge and broaden their understanding of the subject.

The last couple of days have seen more fascinating speakers visit the school to deliver inspirational talks about their chosen careers. Yesterday Emma Wildgoose, a forensic psychologist explained what her role at Bedford & The Mount prisons entails, what a week in her working life looks like and how to enter the profession.
Today we welcomed two speakers, Peter Brimble and Kathryn Grace. Peter is a Development Economist who has travelled the world advising governments on policies, conducting research, monitoring economic trends and much, much more. He gains great satisfaction from helping people, working with governments & NGO’s and the chance to travel globally.
Our second guest speaker Kathryn, is a member of cabin crew for BA and attracted a big audience in the LRC for her talk. Not only did she describe her role but also other areas of the aviation industry which the students found fascinating. She answered questions from one student who is interested in becoming a pilot and another who would like to also train to become cabin crew.
Tomorrow is our final talk for this week and will be from Mark Colvin who is a freight train driver.
We can’t thank all our speakers enough for giving up their time for our students.

Isaac has been selected for the Team GB Muay Thai squad! This is a full-contact combat sport and martial art from Thailand. We wish him every success and look forward to hearing more from him.

As a school we are delighted to offer the Duke of Edinburgh award to all students. We are especially proud of Year 13 student Megan, who has become one of the DofE Youth Ambassadors along with 16 other young people, who have all completed the Mental Health First Aid. Megan and the other Ambassadors were part of the judging panel for This Is Youth and met the winners at a celebration event at the London Transport Museum. Many congratulations Megan for this superb achievement.

Hip hop artist, author and poet Karl Nova, delighted the Year 8 students with tales from his childhood, being moved to Nigeria as a child and his love of words. He was welcomed by Charlie who had written a wonderful tribute to him as part of a piece of classwork. Karl went on to recite several of his inspiring poems then sign copies of his new book and pose for selfies.
