Specialism:Year 10 GCSE Graphics

What will my child be studying?

The first year of the two year course deals with the students acquiring the underpinning skills that are essential to their success in both the written paper and the controlled assessment. The course is carefully planned to ensure that they are taught the underpinning skills that are the foundation of the Graphic Products course. Students design and make a mobile phone using a range of different graphic materials; these will be developed in order to prepare them for the controlled assessment which is started towards the end of year 10.

How is the course assessed?

Controlled assessment 60% of the total marks, External examination 40% of the total marks.

Are there Controlled Assessments?

A single design-and-make activity selected from a choice of set tasks, consisting of the development of a made outcome and a concise design folder and/or appropriate ICT evidence. These tasks are reviewed every two years. The design folder should consist of approximately 20 pages of A3 paper or the equivalent in A4. It is expected that students should spend approximately 45 hours on this activity. As part of the evidence submitted, students should include photographs of the finished products as well as photographs at various stages of the process.

How long are the examinations?

Two hours. The exam is divided into two sections; the first is a design task for which pre-release material is issued in order to ensure thorough preparation. The second is based on theory and drawing skills that will have been studied throughout the course.

What equipment should my child have?

All students should have pencils and coloured pencils for design work (we do not encourage the use of felt tip pens) as well as pens for their written work.
