Creative Media (BTEC) and Film Studies (A level)
Our aim is to foster and support independent and self-reliant learners. We encourage and teach our students to be prepared for real work in the creative media sector, including organisational skills, project management skills and technical skills. We aim to do this in an exciting, challenging and dynamic way.
What will your child learn in our subject?
Students are taught and prepared for work in the real world. They are taught to develop independent research and self-management skills, project planning and management skills along with key skills in organisation and communication.
- Students learn to research audiences and markets and prepare detailed pre-production ideas, scripts and storyboards.
- In production, students learn to use cameras, lights and sound to create products in single camera and multi-camera live set-ups.
- In post-production, pupils learn to edit digital moving image products using the industry standard Adobe Premiere Pro editing suite
- Students also learn technical skills in photography/cinematography, photo manipulation and digital image effects.
Our results are consistently outstanding and the Creative media department continues to grow and improve year on year. Pupils regularly meet their targets at both KS4 and KS5 and a large proportion of our pupils exceed targets and achieve Distinction and Distinction* grades. Many of our students win places to study media related Degree courses at some of the best higher education establishments to study subjects as diverse as Animation, Outside Broadcasting and Film Production and editing.
Students are encouraged to get involved with a range of Film and Media related activities across the school and all are encouraged to borrow equipment for filming and recording assemblies, events, school plays and sports days.
We also run a Film Club for pupils at KS3. We watch newly released films and write reviews for posting online and later in the year we use our knowledge to start introductory film making sessions.
Media trips have included visits to the BBC, Warner Brothers Studios and the BFI.
