Specialism:Year 9 Food Technology

Students may opt for Food in Year 9.  There is the equivalent of 1 lesson per week throughout the year and leads to the GCSE in Food or BTEC in Catering.

What will my child be studying?

Students will extend their knowledge and understanding of food, diet and health;
Students will extend food preparation and cooking techniques;
Students will be able to apply their knowledge to make informed choices;
Students will develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently;
Students will build an apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high quality products for a wide range of users;
Students will evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.

What will be made?

Bread and bread products, Pastry products using a variety of types of pastry, Cakes using all the four methods of cake making, a variety of foreign main meal dishes, a range of dishes showing the properties of eggs in cooking.

How is the course Assessed?

The Course will be assessed using the National Curriculum specification to give a level and sub level. Tasks are set that will ensure stretch and challenge for the most able students but that are also suited for those with less aptitude or experience in D&T.

Is there an examination?

There is an exam taken at the end of the year. This will enable students to demonstrate through writing and drawing, their knowledge and understanding of D&T.

What equipment should my child have?

All students should have pencils and coloured pencils for design work (we do not endorse the use of felt tip pens) as well as pens for their written work. Students will be expected to provide ingredients for practical cookery sessions on a regular basis

How can I support my child’s learning?

Please ensure that homework tasks are completed as they will often be essential for the following lesson; including preparation of ingredients prior to practical lessons.
