Travel and Tourism at Tring School provides students with an excellent opportunity to take an exciting, interesting and rewarding subject. The course is flexibly structured to give candidates plenty of choice to form qualifications that are individual to them.

Travel and Tourism BTEC – Single Award

“75% of the BTEC Extended Certificate (1 A Level) units are coursework based, this allows students to work at their own pace and with less pressure of a high number of summer exams. The examination unit for this qualification is usually sat in January with a resit opportunity available”

Travel and Tourism is one of the worlds biggest industries, it is also one of the most interesting. Travel and Tourism at Tring School provides students with an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge in this exciting, interesting and rewarding subject. The course is flexibly structured to give candidates plenty of choice to form qualifications that are individual to them and their interests within the subject area.

The course of study is designed so that it can be undertaken by candidates entering the area for the first time. The key is having an interest in any form of travel.

Visits to tourist organisations are organised to enhance understanding and aid completion of coursework. Over the past year this has included visits to: Disneyland Paris, Brighton, The New Forest, London, Thorpe Park, Kuoni Travel, Holiday Inn.

The BTEC in Travel & Tourism is a new course specifically designed to allow students to progress into further education, employment or to develop their interest in the subject. Research has shown the 62% of large companies have recruited employees with a BTEC qualification, in addition, 26% of students entering university also hold a BTEC qualification.

  • Grade 4 in GSCE English Language

Assessment

  • Units are predominantly assessed through coursework, thus providing students with alternative assessment methods to the new A Levels.

Future opportunities

The Travel and Tourism BTEC single award qualifies for UCAS points so if you complete it successfully you could move on to study for a degree at university, further education or employment.

Travel and Tourism BTEC – Double Award

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Travel & Tourism (equivalent to 2 full A Levels)

The course is flexibly structured to give candidates plenty of choice to form qualifications that are individual to them. The diversity of the double BTEC Travel & Tourism course allows students to experience a variety of units ranging from international travel to adventure tourism and working overseas.

The course of study is designed so that it can be undertaken by candidates entering the area for the first time. Students have the option of beginning the Extended Certificate (1 A Level) or the Diploma (2 A Levels) in the subject.

By choosing the Diploma students will receive an extended qualification in the same subject. For many, this allows them to not just develop their knowledge of Travel & Tourism, but also to gain an additional subject qualification without stretching into a new subject area.

Results in L3 Travel & Tourism (Double Award) have been excellent. 84% of students at A2 level in 2016 achieved between a A-C grade.

Visits to tourist organisations are organised to enhance understanding and aid completion of coursework. Over the past year this has include visits to: Disneyland Paris, Thorpe Park, Kuoni Travel, Holiday Inn.

The Disneyland Paris trip has been an establised trip for the department for the last 5 years. The visit provides students with the opportunity to experience lectures from key figures within Disney focusing on the travel and tourism industry.

Coursework accounts for 87.5% of the final grade (7 units). The remaining unit is based on case study examinations

  • Grade 4 in GCSE English Language

Assessment

  • 87.5% of the course is coursework based.
  • Students who prefer coursework will enjoy this subject.
