We aim to develop
your design skills, your confidence in making high quality products in different materials, and your awareness of the world around you. If you can think creatively, solve problems, and work on your own or as part of a team, you will be successful in tomorrow’s rapidly changing world.
Curriculum
With 12 specialist rooms, you’re lucky enough to work in one of the best equipped Technology departments in the county. Whether you’re working with food, electronics, textiles, resistant materials or graphics, you’ll either be in a specialist room, or in the department’s own ICT suite. You’ll be using specialist machinery and equipment to produce really impressive work.
In Year 7, you have two lessons a week to do projects which teach you how to use tools and machines you may never have seen before. In years 8 and 9 you do more individual design work before you make your projects. You also have an extra period every other week to develop your graphics skills, both by hand and on the computer, (CAD).
In Key Stage Four, you can do one or two Design & Technology subjects, leading to either a GCSE, or our ‘Skills 4 U’ qualification. For each subject you’ll have 5 periods every two weeks. There will be a mixture of design, theory and practical work. It will be fun, but hard work.
We offer two A-Level courses. Product Design is similar to GCSE Resistant Materials, but with more graphics. Graphic Products is like GCSE Graphic Products, but with a little bit of Resistant Materials. If you want to be a designer or graphic artist, these are the courses for you. If you get the chance to see our students’ A-Level work, you’ll realize how much effort and enthusiasm they put in to this subject.
